What Are the Parts of a Pneumatic Cylinder?

There are several key pneumatic cylinder parts, beginning with the barrel or tube. As the main body of the device, the barrel houses the piston, which converts air pressure into motion via an in-and-out movement. Via the piston rod, the piston’s motion automates push, pull, or lifting processes for external components.

There are a few additional parts of a pneumatic cylinder that assist its operation. Seals prevent air leaks in the barrel, guide rings keep the piston in position to ensure smooth motion, and ports allow compressed air to flow in and out of the barrel.

How to Repair a Pneumatic Cylinder

Pneumatic cylinder repair requires initial disassembly. Once the system has been depressurised and disconnected, it must be secured in a vice and unscrewed via the end caps. A common method of improving performance is to clean the piston and piston rod, using a cloth to remove grease.

If a general cleaning does not fix the problem, common problem areas include:

• Seals: Check for cracks throughout the cylinder and replace any worn or broken seals.
• Barrel: Scratching or corrosion within the barrel may harm the cylinder’s performance.
• Piston Rod: Applying a small amount of lubricant, such as grease or oil, before reinstallation can produce smoother motion.
